IEO is founded in 1945 as an International Electrotechnical Company in Breda, the Netherlands. In addition to medium and high voltage transformers, IEO also made low voltage applications such as low voltage transformers, chokes, autotransformers and generators in the first 10 years. From the late 1950s, IEO has fully focused on distribution transformers and specialized medium voltage transformers. IEO designs and manufactures and distributes transformers from 160 kVA to 10 MVA with system voltages up to 36 kV.

IEO has played an important role in the development and production of standard low-loss transformers, particularly in the Netherlands. A recent example of this is the Dutch Norm '09, a design that is now 12 years old, which today still complies with the Tier I and Tier II (>1000kVA) losses and which form the backbone of the Dutch distribution network. Since the 1970s, IEO has also been active in markets in the Middle East and Africa and from the 1980s also increasingly in Belgium, Germany and Scandinavia.
